Finance Wales’ employees brighten up school playground on Give & Gain Day 2013

The playground at Herbert Thompson Primary School in Ely, Cardiff is now a colourful and vibrant place to play following this year’s Give & Gain Day organised by Business in the Community (BITC).

Twenty-one employees from Finance Wales’ Cardiff office transformed the playground, completing three projects on the day.

They refreshed the school’s outdoor classroom by attaching colourful shapes and numbers to the walls and also gave the woodwork a lick of paint.

The volunteers also spruced up the exterior of the school’s tuck shop, creating a brightly coloured seating area. They then prepared and painted a fifty feet-long wall in the playground which will soon be home to a creepy-crawly mural created by the children.

Finance Wales’ employees raised over £1,000 in donations from friends and family to purchase the materials they needed. The volunteers also secured contributions from Choice Décor; Dixon Property Maintenance; Keyline Builder’s Merchants; Morgan Signs; Paints R Us; S&M Decorating Supplies; S Tranter Construction Services; Stepping Stones and Travis Perkins as well as Asda and Sainsbury’s.

Headteacher Bethan Hocking said: “The hard work and dedication of the Finance Wales team was overwhelming. The huge amount of preparation that went into the project ensured that the Give and Gain Day was an absolute success. The work that has been carried out has had a significant impact on the lives of many children. We cannot thank the team enough.”

Hannah Dixon of Finance Wales said: “It’s an absolute pleasure to be part of this local community project. We were made to feel very welcome at the school and the children were so excited to see our handiwork. Thanks to the generous contributions we received and our fundraising, we now have some left over funds to spend on outdoor furniture, sports equipment and other things for the school.”

Finance Wales is a BITC member and is also sponsoring its Wales Responsible Business of the Year – Small award in 2013.
