New Fund Manager to spearhead investment in Welsh Micro-businesses

Finance Wales has appointed former Barclays Area Business Manager, Nicola Edwards as Micro Loans Fund Manager.

Edwards will head a team of three investment executives based throughout Wales focused on making micro loans of between £1,000 and £25,000.

Micro loans are available from Finance Wales from the £6 million Wales Micro-business Loan Fund as well as the European-backed £150 million Wales JEREMIE Fund. Demand for micro loans from Finance Wales more than doubled in the 2012 -13 financial year compared to the previous financial year.

Business Minister, Edwina Hart welcomed the appointment: “This appointment reflects the importance of micro-businesses in the Welsh economy. The Welsh Government is committed to ensuring that finance is available for them to invest in their businesses which in turn will create jobs and economic growth.

“I would urge ambitious small businesses across Wales to contact Finance Wales to explore how they can help.”

Having worked in small business banking for most of her 25-year career, Edwards is pleased to join Finance Wales at a time when it has additional capital to invest in micro-businesses thanks to the Welsh Government’s Wales Micro-business Loan Fund.

“Small businesses are part of the fabric of the Welsh economy. Many of them have the potential to make an even greater contribution to it and the Wales Micro-business Loan Fund has an important role to play in ensuring they can access the funds they need to do this. I’ve spent most of my career working with start-ups and small/micro-businesses and I’ve seen how the right financial support can have a positive impact on them,” Edwards said.

Welcoming Edwards to the team, New Investments Fund Manager, Mike Owen said: “This is a significant appointment for Finance Wales. Thanks to the Wales Micro-business Loan Fund, more Welsh micro-businesses than ever can now benefit from micro loans. They can help with a range of needs, such as start-up costs, capital expenditure and stock purchases and businesses often use them to unlock much-needed additional investment. Nicola and her team are keen to talk to micro-businesses throughout Wales about what Finance Wales can offer.”

Microbusinesses seeking investment can contact Nicola and her team on 0800 587 4140.

The Micro-business Loan Fund was a key recommendation of the independent Micro-business Task and Finish Group commissioned by the Welsh Government.
