Finance Wales backs young Welsh fashion designers Sexy Mac

It’s practical enough for the wettest school run yet stylish enough for an evening out.  Now, following its London launch on 18th September, a new mac designed by two friends is set to hit the high street thanks to a micro loan from Finance Wales..

Justine Jones and Lorna Oakley used their own funds to design their Sexy Mac and establish their Bridgend-based business in 2013.  Finance Wales’ £25,000 micro loan has provided them with start-up capital to purchase the stock they need to ramp up production of the waterproof mac and satisfy their growing order book.

Manufactured in the UK to the pair’s unique, contemporary design, Sexy Mac is available in a range of colours including red, fuchsia, beige and black from http://www.sexy-mac.com/.

“Lorna and I both worked in the fashion industry and have dreamt of setting up our own business for some years.  We’re both busy mothers and came up with the idea for Sexy Mac because we wanted a coat that’s stylish, easy to wear and functional.  A coat you could wear to work, to pick up the kids or go out for drinks in the evening.

“We’re pleased that Sexy Mac has been so well received since we launched it and also with the level of advanced orders we’ve received.  We’ve already invested our own money in the business to get this far and the loan from Finance Wales has given us the extra boost we needed to start producing and selling Sexy Mac,” Justine explained.

Justine and Lorna have already collaborated with award-winning couture designer, Natalia Kaut to create a special edition Sexy Mac with a removable hood and finished with hand-cut leather detailing.

Finance Wales Senior Investment Executive in the micro loan team, Rhiannon Brewer worked with Justine and Lorna to help finance the next phase of their company’s development.  She said: “Justine and Lorna have come up with a stylish, contemporary product with niche market appeal.  They’ve also paid attention to the all-important design details that set Sexy Mac apart in a very competitive market.

“They’ve coupled their clear vision and industry experience to come up with a strong business plan.  They also have an eye for fashion trends and their tie-up with Natasha Kaut is an important step for them.  Our loan has funded a range of the business’ start-up needs, enabling them to purchase stock, upgrade their website and ordering  systems as well as to implement their marketing campaign.”

Finance Wales’ investment came from the Wales Micro-business Loan Fund.
