Going for gold: Welsh businesses cashing in on sporting success

It’s been an amazing summer of sport. Wales made the semis at Euro 2016, Andy Murray won Wimbledon for a second time and Welsh athletes are joining colleagues from across the UK as part of Team GB at the Olympics and Paralympics in Rio this month.

All that sporting prowess has a trickle down affect to the general public, consumers become excited about sport and keeping fit and that offers a significant business opportunity to companies inclined to invest in the fitness pound. Here are a few examples of companies we’ve worked with who are succeeding on the back of sport fever:

Linebreak UK, Cardiff
Physiotherapist Dean Conwy secured the licence to sell Linebreak’s exclusive compression garments in the UK. Dean has worked with a number of sports stars as the England Cricket Team physio, including co-investor England batsman Joe Root. Working with us he’s been able to buy more stock and expand his sales team. Linebreak UK now supplies the Wales football squad, Liverpool FC, and a number of cricket and rugby stars.

Uprise VSI, Upperboat - Rhondda Cynon Taf
We supported Uprise Marketing in their acquisition of online payment experts VSI. The merged firm works with a number of big sporting clients providing a range of services from website management, ticket payment solutions and marketing. Among their customers are the Cardiff Blues rugby union team and NFL team the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Great Escape and Fitness, Welshpool - Montgomeryshire
Husband and wife team Christopher and Stacey Greatorex secured a micro loan of £25,000 to transform Welshpool’s Art Deco cinema in to a gym and spa. In 2015 the Great Escape and Fitness team won the Powys Business Awards Start-up of the Year category. Their gym is a haven for those seeking to work out in beautiful surroundings in mid-Wales alongside those who prefer to unwind in the spa.

We’ve worked with countless sport-focused business over the years. We’ve financed business acquisitions, property upgrades and new premises, as well as enabling new and established firms to expand with finance for extra staff or working capital. We can invest from £1000 up to £3 million across our ten business funds.
