60 second interview: Melanie Goward

Dr Melanie Goward manages the Wales Technology Seed Fund. She started her career as a geneticist working on the human genome project near Cambridge, before moving into venture capital and funding for science and technology start-ups and early growth companies. She has been with Finance Wales for six years.

You’ve worked at Finance Wales for six years, recently being appointed as Wales Technology Seed Fund Manager, what did you do before joining the Finance Wales team?

I started my career as a scientist, I worked as a geneticist after completing my studies at Cambridge University – I am passionate about bio and medical sciences – but during my work I became really interested in how early stage science and tech companies could get off the ground. I quickly became involved in the finance side of things. I worked with the Technology Group at Lloyds TSB, before becoming the Investment Director at Nesta Investments.  Six years ago I joined Finance Wales.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

My spare time is mostly taken up with my two children.

What is your favourite movie and why?

I’ve always been more of a box set person – a particular favourite is Breaking Bad, the subversive side appeals.

Why is science and technology an exciting business sector?

Technology innovations have the potential to make a huge impact to the way people live and the quality of their lives. It’s really exciting to be able to play an enabling role in getting these to market.

How can Finance Wales help tech start-ups?

The Wales Technology Seed Fund is a £7.5m fund that provides early stage funding to high growth potential technology companies who are based in, or relocating to, Wales. The funding is there to help bring innovative technologies to market and grow valuable technology companies within Wales.
For companies further along their business journey our Technology Venture Investments team can also offer debt and equity packages up to £2million.
