The Studio sets up in Cardiff after £150,000 loan from Finance Wales

The Studio – a brand new health and fitness centre – has opened in Cardiff Bay following a £150,000 investment from Finance Wales. The private members training facility focuses on strength training and body conditioning. Unlike gyms The Studio has no mirrors, no weight machines and no treadmills. Instead members are offered bespoke strength and conditioning programmes.

Co-owner and trainer Owen Edwards (29) explained: “We are a fitness destination, for everyone. We welcome all ages, genders and abilities. The Studio provides tailored training programmes in a friendly, supportive environment. Our goal is to make members strong, fit and healthy. We don’t talk about ‘the burn’, or ‘the pump’ we talk about you and your goals.”

Edwards has a been a personal trainer for nearly eight years, previously working at the prestigious celebrity Soho Gym in London before working as a sole trader for the last four years. He’s set up The Studio with his father Michael.

Strength and conditioning is becoming increasing popular in the UK alongside sports like weightlifting and triathlon. There are over 9 million members of nearly 6500 gyms in the UK and the market is valued at £4.4 billion according to the State of the UK fitness industry report issued by The Leisure Database Company.

Finance Wales Investment Executive Navid Falatoori helped structure the loan. He said “This is an exciting project and offers something new to the fitness scene in Cardiff. Owen has an exciting product which taps into the strength and conditioning training revolution. With the rising popularity of lifting – both with men and women –The Studio is well positioned to become a fitness destination in south Wales.”

Senior Investment Executive Steve Galvin said: “It’s been great to support a new concept like that being offered by Owen and The Studio. Owen and his father Michael have a solid business plan and are offering something original and innovative.”

“Thanks to Navid, Steve and the team at Finance Wales we’re able to offer something new and different to clients and fitness enthusiasts in Cardiff,” added Edwards.

The deal was introduced to Finance Wales by Rob Warlow of Business Loan Services.
