Prima Foods “Does it with Suet!”

A Llanelli based business has scooped one of the most prestigious awards in the UK food industry by winning Premier Foods “Supplier Excellence Award for Sustainability 2015” award.

The food giant Premier Foods, who boast a number of household brands including Mr. Kipling, Bisto, Lloyd Grossman and Ambrosia invited their top 100 suppliers to their supplier conference in early October to set out their plans for the forthcoming year and to celebrate achievements during 2015.

Gavin Derby, CEO reported that Premier Food’s strategy set out at the 2014 Silverstone conference was now beginning to work, despite the challenging conditions of the retail sector; innovation within key brands, a broad manufacturing base and a flexibility to respond to ever changing customer needs in the UK and abroad, were cited as the key drivers behind this success.

Mark Hughes, Purchasing & Operations Director at Premier awarded Peter Rice of Prima Foods with the award for their efforts in moving one of their most iconic brands Atora, across to an RSPO (Round Table for Sustainable Palm Oil) approved fully segregated supply source, whilst investing over £500,000 in a new plant to improve process efficiency.

Mr Hughes emphasised that the award signalled a clear intent to keep the issue of sustainability at the top of Premier Foods’ focus within their supply chain in the coming years.

Managing Director of the South Wales business, Peter Rice said, “We are delighted to receive this award which is recognition that small, independent businesses with a clear vision can deliver tangible growth in areas of high unemployment, if given the right help”. He added that the company was grateful for the support received from Welsh Government, Finance Wales, Tata Steel Subsidiary - UK Steel Enterprise & ABN Amro alongside other stakeholder support from Cardiff Met Food Industry Centre, Carmarthenshire CC, Total Food Marketing & the Growth Accelerator programme.  Since taking on a an initial contract with Premier, 15 jobs have been created within the business, which have now been safeguarded with the signing of a 5 year contract in November last year.

Prima Foods have recently embarked on a consumer awareness campaign through their newly launched website www.suetsecrets.co.uk which is aimed at giving consumers tips and recipe ideas, using suet as an ingredient. Since launching in September their Facebook page has gained over 3000 page likes and continues to grow followers every day.

The company is about to open a new cooking facility in December to produce components for the ready meal sector and has plans to expand their ‘free from’ facility, with the launch of a range of gluten free Home Bakery products under their Chefs Promise brand. This will further underpin job security for existing employees and is expected to create an additional 5 jobs in the coming months.

Congratulating Prima Foods on winning this award Raymond Walters, Portfolio Executive at Finance Wales said: “Prima Foods is a forward-thinking company and winning this prestigious award is a tribute to the drive and ambition of its capable management team.  The company is continuing to grow significantly, winning new contracts, creating new job opportunities and safeguarding the jobs of its loyal workforce in Llanelli. Finance Wales has backed Prima with a number of investments over the last 5 years and we wish them even greater success when they open their new cooking facility later this year.”
